Complete List of Level 5 and 6 hospitals in Kenya

The Kenyan healthcare structure divides hospitals into 6 levels (level 1 to level 6) according to the various functions that they perform in Kenyan Healthcare.  Level 6 hospitals are at the apex of the healthcare structure and function as the national referral health facilities for conditions that can’t be adequately handled by the regional hospitals at lower levels.

The following is a summary of the Kenyan Health structure and is an exploration of the functions of the hospitals at the different levels of care.  A list of level 6 and level 5 hospitals is also highlighted.

Level 1 facilities offer the following services:

Preventive healthcare

Health Promotion and health education

Early detection of conditions, screening, and referral to higher-level hospitals

Enforcing adherence to care and treatment defaulter tracing


Health clinic– Health clinics are at the second level and offer basic outpatient services. 

Dental clinics– outpatient facilities that treat dental-related problems.

Dispensary– Refers to a public, private, school-based, company-based, or faith-based facility that offers basic outpatient care at the second level of care 

Mobile clinic- Health facility that Moves its services from one area to another.

Eye clinic health facility that treats outpatient eye clients (including optical services) for up to twelve hours.

Home-based care services– Health care services that are provided at the patient’s home

Funeral standalone Facility– A facility for storage of dead bodies and performance of autopsy before cremation or burial


Level 3A – Comprehensive Health Centre

A health facility that provides comprehensive preventive, curative, promotive, and rehabilitative health services. It also offers maternity theatre services. 

Level 3B-General Medical and Dental Clinics 

Level 3C- Basic Health Centre

A level 3C basic health center offers several ambulatory health services. It provides preventive and curative healthcare appropriate to the needs of the locals.


A level 4 hospital refers to a primary referral hospital, a specialist standalone facility for consultancy services, or a hospital that offers one or more specialized services. Level 4 hospitals are subdivided into level 4A, 4B, and 4C facilities. Services offered in level 4 hospitals are as described below.

Level 4A- Primary care hospitals

They are the principal primary referral hospitals and offer services that complement primary healthcare to allow for the delivery of more comprehensive treatment.   

Level 4B Facilities

They are specialist stand-alone medical centers, medical-surgical, diagnostic, and clinical laboratory centers

 Level 4C- Specialist health clinics

Offer one or more specialized services, limited to diagnostic, outpatient, daycare, and consultancy services.


A Level 5 health facility is a secondary referral hospital that provides a more comprehensive set of services than those offered in a Level 4 facility. It also provides internship services for medical staff, conducts research, and serves as a training center for paramedical professionals.

Level 6A- National Teaching and Referral Hospital  

A level 6A hospital is a national referral center for level 5 and lower-level hospitals. It also acts as a teaching and training center for various diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate medical professionals.

Level 6B-Specialized hospitals

They offer specialized services exclusively or a group of specialized services such as radiological, oncology, ophthalmology, dental, and renal services.

Level 6A Hospitals

1.Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH)

As the biggest hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, East, and Central Africa, KNH is the national referral hospital and offers training and educational services to students from various colleges and universities such as the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, and KNH school of Nursing among others.

It is the most advanced public hospital in the East African region providing a variety of specialized services to many.

2.Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret

Popularly regarded as the best public hospital in Kenya, MTRH serves as the overall referral center for the Western and Rift Valley regions of Kenya, also serving neighboring countries such as South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.

3.Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital

The Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital is a national referral level 6A hospital with a bed capacity of 650. It offers healthcare services across multiple specialties such as Surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, cancer treatment, and general medical services among others.

It’s also a teaching and research hospital for many health institutions across the country such as Kenyatta University and the Kenya Medical Training College among others.

4.Nakuru Level 6 Hospital

Elevated in 2019 to the level 6 national referral Hospital, the Nakuru level 6 hospital has large and modern facilities across different specialties to provide healthcare services to counties surrounding Nakuru. It has

Its maternity wing has a bed capacity of 250, the second largest after Pumwani Maternity Hospital. There are specialists for all medical specialties enabling the hospital to offer services that other hospitals in the region cannot provide.

5.Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (Level 6)

Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) is a level 6 public hospital in Kisii Town and is a referral center for various hospitals in Nyanza and the South Rift Valley regions of Kenya. The Kisii Hospital was established in 1916 and currently has a bed capacity of 650 enough for patients from Kisii County and other neighboring counties.

1.National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital

The National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital is a level 6B referral health facility for spinal cord injuries from around Kenya and neighboring countries. It is well equipped with the current technological systems necessary for the correction of spinal disabling injuries.

2.Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital

Established in 1901, The Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital is the largest psychiatry and mental illness hospital in Kenya and East Africa with a bed capacity of 1500 beds. It is also a teaching and research hospital for students from various universities and colleges around the country.

    Its nice..The addition of Kenyatta university teaching and refferal to the list of Level 6 hospitals is a plus…although am of the idea that the coast teaching and refferal be upgarded to level 6 so that it serves the coastal belt + Eastern and north eastern parts
