The Tenwek hospital is the best and largest mission hospital in Kenya with a bed capacity of 361. It is a level 6b teaching and referral hospital serving as a referral center for Bomet County and other regions in the country. It is well known for its Christian centered world-class healthcare and is managed by the World Gospel Mission (WGM). Its bed capacity of 361 makes it one of the largest mission hospitals in Africa.
The hospital’s quality of care is among the best in Kenya, with its name resonating among patients with complicated illnesses from all corners of the country.

History
Tenwek Mission Hospital’s foundations date back to 1935 when the colonical government awarded land to Mr. Hotchkiss, who in turn donated the land to the World Gospel Mission. Trudy Shyrock was the first trained nurse at the center in 1937. Dr. Ernie Steury served as a missionary doctor in 1959 and was later joined by several other missionaries to offer medical services to the local Kipsigis Community.
The hospital that started as a small clinic has now grown into an advanced level 6b hospital in Kenya.

General Outpatient Clinic
The Outpatient has several clinics with many specialists such as ENT Surgeons, General Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Neurosurgeons, Obstetricians, Gynecologists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists among others.
Accident and Emergency Unit
The casualty department at Tenwek Hospital is well-equipped and well-staffed with professionals experienced in emergency medicine. The emergency Unit operates 24 hours a day and is supported by ambulances that are available to pick patients around Bomet County at any time.
Ophthalmology Services
The hospital boasts a modern eye unit with specialists to handle many advanced eye disorders. The hospital also provides eye surgical services to many patients referred from across the country.
Dental Services
The dental unit at Tenwek Hospital has a large team of dentists and dental technologists, and is well-equipped to handle all dental disorders. The dental clinic is operational every Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some dental services offered include:

Diagnostic Services
The Laboratory at the hospital performs many tests such as blood sugar, complete blood count (full hemogram), renal profile, liver function tests, lipid profile, and urinalysis among others. The lab is also able to perform histology and cytology tests through the pathologists available on-site.
The Imaging and Diagnostics Center has an ultrasound scan, an X-ray Machine, and a CT Scan machine that takes images of various parts of the body to assist clinicians in making diagnoses.
Neurosurgical Services
Neurosurgical clinics are done on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the main Hospital and on Wednesdays at the Bomet Annex Clinic. The neurosurgeons perform More than 500 surgeries yearly on patients from different counties in Kenya.
Common conditions treated in the neurosurgical department include:
- Hydrocephalus
- Brain and spine infections
- Trauma to the brain and Spine
- Brain tumors
- Spinal tumors among others
Inpatient Medical Services
The 361 beds are spread between different departments where patients recover before being discharged home. The wards have general rooms, semi-private, and private rooms that one can choose from depending on their financial abilities.
The medical ward has two internal medicine consultants who diagnose and treat various diseases in the wards such as:
- Hypertension and its complications
- Diabetes and its complications
- Heart diseases from different causes
- Cancers and their related complications such as anemia
- Severe infectious illnesses such as TB
- Kidney failure and related complications
Pediatric Services
Many children with congenital and chronic conditions born in different parts of the country have found treatment solutions at the Tenwek Hospital. Common conditions treated in the pediatric wards include:
- Pneumonia
- Meningitis, including TB and Viral Meningitis
- Traumatic injuries
- HIV/AIDS and its complications
- Diarrhea
- Congenital defects of the heart, intestines, genitalia, and nervous system among others
Maternity Services
The Maternity unit at the Tenwek Hospital performs an average of 10 deliveries per day and 5 caesarian sections daily. It has a bed capacity of 117 and also features some semi-private rooms for those who desire more privacy.
Surgical Services
The department of surgery has specialists who perform surgeries in the fields of general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, and Neurosurgery among others. The hospital has many theaters and modern equipment to perform complex surgeries such as spinal and brain surgeries.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Tenwek Hospital has a neonatal intensive care unit for newborns who develop severe conditions such as birth defects, respiratory distress, seizures, severe bacterial infections (sepsis), and low blood sugar among others.
The adult ICU has a bed capacity of 6 and is complemented by a 7-bed HDU that enables the hospital to offer intensive care services to more patients at any given time.
Educational services
The Tenwek College of Health Sciences offers various diploma courses such as a diploma in Community health Nursing, and a diploma in Clinical Medicine, General Nursing, and Midwifery. The college does not offer certificate Nursing Courses.
The Hospital is also a postgraduate residency training center, an internship center for medical doctors, Nutritionists, and clinical officers
The Tenwek Hospital School of Chaplaincy trains future church leaders from various countries in Africa.
The hospital is also a key medical research center in Kenya, identifying the health trends and innovative disease control measures for tropical and non-communicable diseases in Kenya.
Tenwek Hospital Charges
Maternity Charges
- A normal delivery costs Ksh. 20,000. This is inclusive of ward fees, medication, and other services.
- A Caesarian delivery Costs about 40,000 which is inclusive of the ward fees, theater fees, drugs, and laboratory tests until discharge.
ICU charges are Ksh. 10,000 per day. Neonatal ICU charges are also Ksh. 10,000 per day
General consultation is charged at a fee of Ksh 500 which is paid as a registration fee. The consultation fee is different for specialists and is Ksh.2,000 and above depending on the specialist being consulted. The Consultation fee is not inclusive of laboratory tests, radiology and imaging, and medication.

Tenwek Hospital is NHIF accredited and accepts different NHIF schemes for payment of services from consultation fees, to laboratory tests, imaging, and drugs.

Do you perform endoscopy and stentinting for NHIF card supported patient
My daughter 19 years has a heart problem.The heart beat is too high and and cannot concentrate in her studies.One a Mexican doctor has advised me to bring the patient to Tenwek hospital for treatment. I’m from Busia county Malaba Township. Kindly advice on the move.
